Retire To The Adelaide Hills

If you like the rural feel, then retiring to a place in the Adelaide Hills may just be for you.
Start at the Mt Lofty Summit, which is only 15 kilometres from Adelaide. Take a walk, have a coffee of a meal and enjoy the fantastic view (where you can see the city of Adelaide or the sea).

Retirees come to the Adelaide Hill to escape the suburban scene. The climate is cooler and the air is free of pollution. From a retirees’ perspective, a big feature of the Adelaide Hill is its proximity to Adelaide.

The Adelaide Hills can be reached by the South Eastern Freeway or by via more than a dozen minor roads that link the suburbs to the hills.

One of the best known villages in the Adelaide Hills is Hahndorf. Its original settlers emigrated from Prussia to escape religion persecution, arriving in Adelaide Port after enduring a most difficult voyage.

The captain of the ship, Captain Hahn, was so impressed with his passengers that he made it his duty to ensure that they found a place that they could settle as a group. Captain Hahn settled on the site of the present township and the settlers named the town in his honour – Hahndorf literally meaning ‘Hahn’s village’.

Food and wine (eg: cheeses, smoked meats, organic fruit and vegetables), the bed and breakfast establishments make the area attractive to visitors.

We noted local farming families gathering for dinner and a weekly catch-up in a hotel in Hahndorf one Friday evening.
